we've been thinking about this since january. live it, live it large and have fun. on its way to 97 or 98 degrees today. 94 degrees this evening. hey, you deal with it when it's cold and hot. we don't have to shovel this. >> are they having fun on the commute? here's kristy. well, i wouldn't say fun, but we have a few problems to update you on. in cockiesville, we have a crash at shawan road. there's a slowdown up to whitemarsh. the average speed around the beltway is 60 miles per hour. we have plenty of road closures in baltimore city. east conway between light and charles street and the greek festival in town has eastern avenue closed at foster avenue. we'll take a live look.

you can see everything moving smoothly at greenspring. not much activity on the beltway north of the key bridge. and for the most accurate information available, count on us at wjz.com. an extreme heat is what everyone's talk about today. schools are adjusting their days because of it. the advisories will be at the bottom of the screen. wjz and andrea fujii are live. the heat has claimed lives already. >> reporter: good morning, don and everyone. the health department says over the past week and a half, two people have died from this heat. >> reporter: it was just last week, weather was so hot, schools closed early. a student and teacher were treated for heat related illness in anne arundel county and now, we're learning that two over the age of 65 have

died because of the heat. we see it early in the season before people are used to the heat. they're not thinking about checking in on neighbors and elderly. >> after dealing with the outages last week, bge is keeping a close eye on the systems. >> the equipment by nature is already hot. it heats up more when it's hot outside. there's more power flowing through the license -- lines. >> no one is immune to the problems of the heat. even if you have your kids outside and you're outside yourself, make sure you take a lot of breaks and you get indoors and keep cool. >> now, the city issued a code red heat alert today. >> reporter: cooling centers will also be open. people are asthma, be

careful. poor air quality is expected with the heat. crews are working to restore another power outage. this comes days out an outage due to a transformer explosion and a fire. this time, the power plant have been overloaded. counseling services will be closed today. a man the police are calling a person of interest is in custody this morning. according to the media partner, it happened while a woman was moving into st. paul street. more testimony expected in the murder trial of a city police officer accused of murdering a man outside of a night club. here's more in the case. >> reporter: this woman broke down in an emotional interview the day after baltimore city police officer tshamba gunned down her brother. one year later, she was calm in court as she recounted her

brother's last moments alive. the defense called her hoping that the inconsistencies in her statement would booster her defense. she was consistent and it proves tshamba was aggressive. >> reporter: she testified that the officer smacked her female friend's backside. tshamba confronted brown. she said he fired shot after shot. as brown lay bleeding, he walked off. he identified himself and gave orders consistent with making an arrest. >> his account stands in the next defense. this is the woman who's buttocks he grabbed. she said he believed he was trying to hit her back.

tshamba said he was going to arrest brown for touching her and brown chased tshamba and he shot him in self-defense. >> reporter: a club promoter also witnessed the incident. at the courthouse east, mike hellgren, wjz, eyewitness news. it's not clear whether tshamba will testify in his own defense. a former delaware pediatrician is waiting to hear a judge's call. his one day trial came to an end after two police officers testified for the prosecution. the judge will review more than 13 hours of graphic video evidence before he makes the ruling. you may have heard of the comcast triple play, now, there may be a quadruple play. comcast is adding another service, home security. it will include fire monitoring and cameras and motion detectors.

it won't be in maryland before it's tested across several other cities. this could be the end of airport pat downs for ever. passengers are separated by security risks and tunnel like scanners are able to identify liquids in their shoes and it uses eye scan technology to match passengers to their passports and id's. also sorts of new gaming creations are at e-3. security there is also a concern. >> reporter: the electronic entertainment expo is a dream come true for several. the gaming companies are in los angeles. one of the big draws is

nintendo's latest. it's the wii you. >> it's hd and easier to play. it's fun for everyone. >> reporter: play station is trumpeting a new console also. >> we'll have over 100 games for 3-d. >> reporter: this comes weeks after major security breaches rocked the industry. millions of play station owners had their security hacked. sony shut down the online store and 90% of the network operations are back. while this is a major concern for the industry, interestingly, the polls hoe -- polls show that most people are more worried about the games than their security. >> the hack on sony resulted in

thank you, andrea. people with asthma are advised to be very careful today. stay with wjz-13 for first warning weather coverage and constant updates on the forecast. you can also find cooling centers on wjz.com. another pit bull has been shot. this time, it was in severna park. this man shot his neighbor's dog with his handgun when it came in his yard barking and growling. he's charged with animal cruelty. additional charges could be filed. the 12-year-old found murdered inside her gaithersburg home died as a result of stab wounds. they're trying to determine whether or not the 6th grader knew her attacker. >> we're getting an incredible view of a wild fire of historic

proportions. this is the magnitude of the wildfire from space. it's a 0% containment. it's already charred nearly 500 square miles. >> reporter: a plume of smoke rises above the blaze. the firefighters haven't seen anything like it. already, 3000 people have evacuated. 7000 were on stand by until tuesday evening. the fire is starting to move again quickly. the winds are erratic and they're swirling. it's getting into heavy fields. we feel it's safe and we've asked the folks to go ahead and move out. >> reporter: five structures burned and firefighters are trying to save more. >> we were doing another night burn. we were, literally, our backs were to the buildings and up to people's homes.

one of those had gone down. >> reporter: the winds were strong, but not harsh like predicted. the fire breaks appeared to be holding. the fire has grown the most on the northside. that's burning national forests and no serious injuries are reported. thousands of firefighters, including some in new york state are heading to the area. democrats and republicans are finding chon ground in an effort to distance themselves from anthony wiener. there's little they can do to force him to redesign. most are staying silent about him accept for harry reed. >> i know congressman wiener. i wish there was a way i could defend him, but i can't.

>> republicans are calling for wiener to resign, but he refuses to do so. gm and ford says their profits are going up. they're no longer burdened by problems of the past. they're focused on growing markets like india and china. construction on the major interstates are booming. booming-- is booming. >> reporter: from the baltimore beltway to the national pike and beyond the region, maryland roads are undergoing a major taxation formation --

transformation. >> construction is everywhere. >> reporter: 695 will see big changes. there's a $25 million project. tuesday night, the state highway administration installed concrete barriers. >> reporter: as you look down towards the 695 overpass, what does it look like? >> it's confusion right now. they working on it. >> reporter: on i-95. they're doing road repaving. funneling three lanes of traffic down to 1. that creates a bottleneck for drivers. the overpass at 695 is also replaced. this is schedule to be completed by summer of next year. big headaches now and it will be a big pay off down the road. the overpass in liberty road is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2012. the overpasses are also
